Unlocking the Artist: Workshop Series 2017
The series of free workshops is designed to unlock the artist within and empower you as an individual and community partner. Our series will be taught by amazing teachers and collaborators that are so excited to engage with you in the creative process. All workshops are listed below and you can join as many as you would like. A small deposit of $10 is required for registration per workshop. 1. Drawing Anatomy Workshop by Mario Menjivar
Tue, July 11 (6 to 8 pm), Th, July 13 (6 to 8 pm) & Sat, July 15 (11am to 1pm)
Class Description: Students will learn how to draw some of the major bones and muscles in the human body. It’s known that a strong anatomy foundation is the beginning of a great artist. Class Objectives: To help students understand of the body’s structure and
its purpose in art. Students will learn to analyze physical structures, figuring out how and why they work. Students will also learn how to simplify shapes before giving them details. This foundation will help lead the student toward other principals of art such as: Painting, Sculpture, Illustrations, Comics and Animation.
2. Fanzine Creation with Laura Villana Taller en Español
Sat, May 20 (2 to 4 pm)
Descripción del taller: Amores, odios, aventuras, sueños, ciencia ficción, magia. ¿Qué más puedes meter en el papel? fotocopiar, distribuir, sonreir. ¡Preparados para una rápida y creativa sesión de publicaciones independientes! Dibujar, recortar, pegar, escribir, toda una combinación para una muy buena producción Y lo más importante, ¡Compartir!, fanzines y zines para los amantes de las historias dibujadas.
3. Crocheting Workshop with Grace Cepeda
Sat, June 3 (11am to 1 pm), Sat, June 10 (11 am to 1pm) & Sat, June 17 (2 to 4 pm)
We will be crocheting a beautiful, but very simple, spring / summer shawl. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or this is your first time ever learning to crochet, by the end of the class, you will be able to crochet a shawl.
4. The Language of Protest Writing Workshop with Natalie N. Caro, John Maney
Sat, June 3 (2 to 4 pm), Sat, June 10 (2 to 4 pm)
This workshop will explore the place of objects in memory and how they convey collective truths. We will incorporate materials that engage the tactile senses to the effects of building spicier vocabularies and more concrete images in our work. Writers will be asked to bring in one short piece of writing, by another author, that connects to the concept of protest or witness.
5. Larger than Life – A Storytelling Workshop with author Charlie Vázquez
Th, June 15 (6 to 8 pm)
Charlie Vázquez is the Director of the Bronx Writers Center at Bronx Council on the Arts, as well as an author and poet. He will reveal how he uses bits of family folklore and real-life occurrences as foundations for tales that morph into suspenseful short stories. Charlie will share one such tale as part of this two-hour workshop, before leading participants in a writing exercise where they will do the same: use an event from their lives as the basis for a story that becomes something greater, something larger than life.
6. Shadow Puppetry by Melissa Chernowetz
Sat, June 17 (11 am to 1pm)
Shadow Puppetry is a beautiful and delicate art with it’s origins in prehistory. A shadow puppeteer will teach you some basic techniques so you can tell your own stories. Come with an idea or sketch to make a shadow puppet out of paper. Experiment with different types of lighting to achieve completely practical effects.
