The Power of Asking – Our New Space: Familiar but Better!

Diartspora Documents, Uncategorized, Updates

We have been a bit quiet for a while. Our silence was a focused, resilient and purposeful time to recharge and pursue our goals with tenacity. Many of you that have followed our journey since 2014, know that in the midst of the pandemic, we lost our first ever space.  Our organization was able to grow roots in the Melrose neighborhood and after a great year we had to move out.  That space that was so special to us, sat empty and unused for two years so we decided to do something about it.

This is when a great lesson was learned.  Each time we drove by our old space we thought about what would happen if we emailed the owners and asked about it.  This thought came with many doubts  and insecurities.  Why would they consider us? But we decided to email them after all and waited for an answer.  This lesson, on the power of asking when in doubt or even when experiencing fear of rejection, helped us grow the most.  Asking could be the first step in obtaining many blessings.  You must ask to know, you just have to make a big leap of faith and ask.  It happened to be that when we emailed them with a humble proposal to ask about the space, the answer, this time around in our journey, was YES!

BxArts Factory is pleased to announce the opening of their new space at 240 E 153rd Street, Bronx, NY 10451.

In 2019 BxArts Factory rented three studios at this same location but was forced to move out when the space closed in the midst of a global pandemic and lockdown.  In an exercise of resiliency and persistence we reached out to the owner of the space when we realized that the space continued to be empty and unoccupied after two years.  Our proposal was accepted so we are happy to now call our old space our new home.

BxArts Factory’s space has 11 studios that will be available for rent by local artists and creative entrepreneurs.  The space will also include two shared-space studios for short-term rental. Additionally the space will have an art gallery and a meeting space.  We envision a welcoming community space destination for creatives, artists and community members.

BxArts Factory needs your help more than ever to make this community space a thriving destination in our borough.  If you are interested in renting a studio please contact us at info@bxartsfactory.org to receive more information.  You can also support us by making a tax-deductible donation

Antoinette Legnini – NAP Virtual Resident 2019

Past NAP Resident

Annie Legnini (b. 1994) is an artist born and raised in the Bronx. She graduated from Fordham University in 2016 with a B.A. in Visual Arts and Women’s Studies. Legnini’s main body of work is comprised of mixed media portraits. She paints faces in realistic detail and then collages repurposed objects on the remainder of the portrait to create features like hair, glasses, and clothing. The materials that Legnini uses may seem to be outdated or disposable, but serve to ignite a sense of nostalgia and familiarity, like her use of childhood Pokemon cards or expired Metrocards. Legnini feels that what has built us to be who we truly are today may sometimes feel distant, outdated, and unpolished; but these humble beginnings are where we built our foundational scaffolding, got our sea legs, and learned how to navigate this world. And so she uses objects and memorabilia in portraits to time travel to these early foundational days and weave a more personal relationship between the audience and her art. She is best known for her collaborative community art project called Bronx Faces: a series that pairs the stories and experiences of Bronx natives with a personalized mixed media portrait. Legnini has participated in the 2019 L.A. Summer Residency at Otis College in Los Angeles, and the 2018 Mixed Media Residency at Con Artist Collective in New York City. She is also a recipient of the BRIO award in 2018. Today, Legnini is a Teaching Artist with Spark: an art, yoga, and meditation program for kids all across New York City. Legnini lives and works in the Bronx.

What’s My Art Exhibition

BxArts Factory presents the first ever #WhatsMyArt Exhibition during Boogie on the Boulevard!
Come on by to our Street Gallery on the Arts Block (Grand Concourse between 165th and 164th streets) and see the work of photographer Trevon Blondet. This exhibition will be on display on every Boogie on the Boulevard: June 25, July 23, August 20 & September 10 from 12 to 4 pm

About the Project:
#WhatsMyArt is an initiative created by BxArts Factory and Trevon Blondet to connect artists and community members so we can Unlock the Artists within them. It is also a way to bring consciousness to art as an essential tool in our lives. We believe there is art in everything we do. We strongly work to Bring Art to Every Household in The Bronx through a series of community projects, workshops and events. These photos serve as documentation of the wonderful creative spirits that call The Bronx their homes and a testimony to the desire of being heard and owning our narrative. They capture how the Bronx community experience Art in their lives
#WhatsMyArt project was made possible in collaboration with BxArts Factory during Boogie on The Boulevard. This summer festival is part of the Weekend Walks events sponsored by the NYC Department of Transportation and the Department of Health.

The Street Gallery project as well as all the art activities at the Arts Block during Boogie on the Boulevard, are made possible through the Grant Our Street & Spaces. This grant was awarded to BxArts Factory this year thanks to the Building Healthy Communities initiative through the Fund for Public Health in New York City and was funded by the New York State Health Foundation.
