Boricuba: 2×2 Art Exhibition

Exhibition News, Exhibitions

BxArts Factory presents BORI-CUBA 2×2 Art Exhibition at
Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center
November 6th to December 6th 2015
107 Suffolk Street, New York

Artists:
Alejandro Epifanio, Alicia Leal, Annex Burgos, Carlos Mateu, Clara Morera, Diogenes Ballester, Elizam Escobar, Frank Guiller, Ibrahim Miranda, Ivelisse Jimenez, Jesus Rivera, Josue Guarionex Colon-Rosado, Juan Fernando Morales, Juan Si Gonzalez, Juana Valdes, Juanita Lanzo, Lissette Solorzano, Luis Stephenberg, MarcosDimas, Maria Dominguez, Nelson Alvarez, Nestor Otero, Nitza Tufino, Rafael Velez, Raul Villarreal, Renelio Marin

BORI-CUBA 2X2 seeks to provide an overview of how visual artists in two contemporary Caribbean cultures, Cuba and Puerto Rico, address the continuous dialogue between island and diaspora. For different reasons, a sizable sector of both islands’ populations has become diasporic, and the ongoing dialogue between both sectors has come to define their identities. It has been repeatedly said that both islands are “wings of the same bird” or mirror images of each other. To begin with, they share a strong Taino strand in their pre-Columbian history and a common Spanish colonial heritage. Both islands were, in fact, the last remnants of the Spanish empire in the Americas and were administratively treated in much the same way. The two islands’ culture was also shaped by a strong African presence and both have acted as ciphers of geopolitical brinksmanship since colonial days. Around the mid 20th century, this situation was reinforced by the relationship each island developed with the United States during the Cold War, with each one assuming a diametrically opposite relationship to its northern neighbor. Cuban visual culture, both that of the Island and that of the Diaspora, has had an overt political tone according to its pro or anti Cuban Revolution stance, reflected in its pro or anti U.S. position. The visual culture of Puerto Rico, on the other hand, has frequently displayed a covert political undertone, frequently addressing its colonial relationship to the United States. Are contemporary Cuban and Puerto Rican artists aware of this common tradition or are they distancing themselves from those concerns? Given the no less contrasting situation of the latest U.S. attitudes toward both islands (while there is a definite rapprochement with Cuba, there seems to be a great indifference toward helping solve Puerto Rico’s fiscal crisis), it is certainly pertinent to study whether those attitudes are being addressed in the current art production of both countries, both by the artists who live on the islands and those who are part of their diasporas.

12”x 12”
1 st BxArts Factory’s Fundraising Exhibition
APRIL 18, 2015 – From 5 to 10 pm
Location: Gun Hill Brewing Company 3227 Laconia Ave, Bronx, NY 10469

BxArts Factory is pleased to announce their first international small format fundraising exhibit 12”X12”.  The event will take place at the Gun Hill Brewing Company on Saturday, April 18th from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

12”X12” is a compilation of artworks created by renowned and up and coming international and local artists in multiple mediums.  We have over 150 pieces from artists in Mexico, Indonesia, Germany, Spain, and, of course, local Bronx and NYC artists!

If you don’t own a piece of artwork or if you are a collector, this is an amazing opportunity to buy some art.  You’ll also be contributing to the fund to renovate our, soon to be, space near The Hub in The Bronx! It is a win-win situation!

The BxArts Factory’s new space will be an incubator for Bronx artists to grow, collaborate and create.  We will be a multipurpose space that will include: an art research center, resident artists’ studios, performance space, classrooms and gallery space. The BxArts Factory endeavors to become a preeminent Arts institution in The Bronx, dedicated to the promotion and use of the Arts as a vital tool to inspire artists and communities within the borough to contribute to the social and economic development of The Bronx.  Help us reach our goal!

The evening will be filled with music, art, and a great vibe! Entertainment will be provided by local Bronx talents Elena Rosa Music, 2 in the Afternoon and Eve’s Fault, among other surprise performances.  Additionally, guests will be able to enjoy live art by local artists, caricatures by Kenly Dillard and Pablo D. Martinez, a selfie station, and many other fun surprises! We will also have local food truck Antojitos Mexicanos joining the festivities just outside the brewery!

Thank You: Closing Reception of Innuendos

Exhibition News, Exhibitions

This past April 1st our art exhibition came to an end with an amazing closing reception!  The evening was filled with great energy as our performers presented their craft.  Lorraine Currelley performed “A Poetic Narrative Birthed From The Stuff My Mother Gave Me” , accompanied by Jazz Saxophonist Sahji.
Sharon Lee De La Cruz and Rena Anakwe presented the multimedia piece titled A Manifesto Against The War on Mother Nature: Part One.  This performance explored the current state of humanity through a digitally rendered narrative utilizing: animation, video, original and sampled compositions and dance.

Anthony Rosado invigorated the night with his very powerful performance titled “mi mama me dijo to call for Universal Humyn Love in these united states of AmeriKKKa”.  This solo presentation is Anthony’s testimony as a queer man of color inherently afflicted by lies embedded in the Pledge of Allegiance. Following obstructed rebellion of the pledge, I divulge ways my mother taught me forgiving, unconditional love.

The artists’ panel was a superb discussion! We started a conversation with the community that we want to continue because issues like equality, colorism, roles, body, and womanhood are things we have to address. These types of conversations are necessary to start changing society’s views one person at a time. We are all responsible for continuing in the old paths or creating new ones. Women like Laura Alvarez, Laura James, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, Elena Bouza, Melissa Calderon, Melanie Gonzalez, Cinnamon Willis, Yelaine Rodriguez, Ijeoma D. Iheanacho, Yolanda L. Rodriguez and Yarisa Colon are examples of the brave women that use art every day to fight against the norm.

We were amazed at the support of an amazing audience!  We had a full house and many people were standing up!
Thank you very much to all that attended and those that came in the BCA Arts Trolley!

Thank you to the Andrew Freedman Home staff and support for all their help!

The Women That Inspired Us!

Exhibition News, Exhibitions

As we approach our art exhibition opening for Innuendos, we asked the artists participating in the show, about the women in history that had inspired them.  This series of Facebook informational posts strives to honor the women that so diligently and bravely lived and worked before us to bring knowledge, freedom, wisdom, awareness, justice, creativity, strength and a river of inspiration to the women today.

The Bronxite women participating in this exhibit wanted to honor these women as we celebrate Women History Month in March.  These women represent different races, times in history, languages and geographical spaces but a significant part of the women that inspired us further more pursue the attainment of the Civil Rights and Justice for all members of this world.

Among the names mentioned by our artists we have: Ida B. Wells, Nina Simone, Toni Morrison, Elizabeth Catlett, Julia De Burgos, Olympia De Gouges, Louise Bourgeois, Minerva Mirabal and Simone de Beauvior!

To learn more about these women visit our Facebook Page or click on the resource links below:

Innuendos: The Voices of 10 Bronxite Women

Exhibition News, Exhibitions

BxArt Factory will be celebrating Women History Month with their Art Exhibition: Innuendos: The Voices of 10 Bronxite Women

We know that the issues that still affect women today are topics that must be talked about often but we hope that with this exhibition we continue the conversation and bring awareness to the community.  Innuendos opens at the Andrew Freedman Home (1125 Grand Concourse) on Friday, March 6th and runs through April 1st!

Definition:
in•nu•en•do noun \ˌin-yə-ˈwen-(ˌ)dō, -yü-ˈen-\  a statement which indirectly suggests that someone has done something immoral, improper, etc.
an oblique allusion : hint, insinuation; especially : a veiled or equivocal reflection on character or reputation

Celebrating Women’s History Month
Curated by Yelaine Rodriguez and Yolanda Rodriguez

Presented by Visiones Culturales & BxArts Factory

These collection of work by ten women artists from The Bronx looks to connect you to the female form. We wish to celebrate the women body and spirit as it is the biggest accomplishment of our freedom and at the same time celebrate the creativity in the unique and forever inspirational work of women artists.

Innuendos will create a forum for women and all members of the community to talk and discus the problematic that women are still confronting in this new age and how some of the relevance of our accomplishments continues to be ignored by many members of our society. The metaphors implanted in the celebration of our body and spirit work to destroy the stigmatism behind the elegance of the women’s body and the closeness of our spirit to the universe.
The work will explore and bring light to how the women body has being the victim of social innuendos that lack sensitivity and respect putting women into boxes created by society in an attempt to denigrate our rightful place in the global society.

The art work will seek to illustrate the women body and spirit as its being affected or negatively influenced by the struggles with the constant use of it as a tool for sexualization, commercialization and enslavement. The presentation of this group of conceptual work will illustrate the attempts of different societal elements and how they have tried to incarcerate women’s freedoms and the power and right to be one force in this patriarchal society.
