I am Longwood Arts Festival

Arts in the Community

By Tasha Valentino

On July 4, 2016 the BxArts Factory participated in their 2nd event of the summer.  They were one of the many artisans who came out to the “I am Longwood Arts Festival”. The event was a success as they “celebrated and promoted cultural vitality of the arts in the South Bronx”.

BxArts Factory had the opportunity to talk to many community members about how they bring art to their homes, what type of art they do and how they feel this has benefited their lives.  The community activity facilitated by awesome volunteers, encouraged participants to have fun with art, stimulated teamwork and promoted creativity without competition.  This was displayed as children, parents, and siblings worked together for a common goal.  They all contributed their time and talents towards a community collage which will be displayed at PS 333.  Members of the community continued to return to the table to see the evolution of the project.  Many commented they were excited to have been a part of the project as it reminded them of the space they live in.  It also bought them a sense of pride and strength to know that, as a community, they are resilient despite individual challenges.

BxArts Factory at the First 2016 Boogie on the Boulevard

Arts in the Community, Boogie on the Boulevard

by John Maney Jr.

May 29th was a lovely, sunny, summerlike day, prefect for the first 2016 Boogie on the Boulevard, in the Bronx. The event begun with setting up tents, tables, and chairs, along the Grand Concourse, starting at 162nd Street. And, of course, there was also the issuing of the coveted pink Boogie on the Boulevard, volunteer t-shirts. Pink not being a natural color choice for me, I tried my best to rock and wear it with pride. After all I was representing the BxArts Factory, and we were at the first tables along the Grand Concourse, right across from the main stage.

The BxArts Factory conducted several fun activities for people as they walked up, and down the Boulevard. At one table Liz and Natalie helped children, and some adults, make beautiful, fancy costumes. While at another table Karen painted old tires to be made into planters. At the table where Omesh and I worked, we took a smiley face/ frowning face survey on whether people did art at home. Then, once the survey was completed, participants wrote on eraser board what their art was, held the boards proudly up to their chests, and Trevon snapped pictures of them.

While all these things were happening Alexis, Twahira, and our tireless leader Laura floated from table to table, making sure everything was running smoothly. And, from what I could tell most everything did. It was a beautiful day, and I was glad to have visited with the over 50 people who stopped by, to spend a little time with the BxArts Factory.

South Bronx Love Letter

Arts in the Community, Our Stories

Join us for an evening of art, musical performances and community discussion centered on the immigrant experience and Bronx love.

Artist Not4Prophet will perform original songs inspired by Joe Hill, a Swedish immigrant, songwriter and labor activist, and recount stories from his own life experiences in the Bronx. Following the performance, all attendees are invited to share stories, memories, and ideas in a story circle, and contribute a love note to the Bronx on our “South Bronx Love Letter” interactive station.

This event is presented in conjunction with BxArts Factory ‘s exhibit “Memories Un-Remembered,” a collection of visual stories exploring immigration, nostalgia, displacement, adaptation, and gentrification.

The Bronx Music Heritage Center Laboratory is located at 1303 Louis Niñé Blvd. Take the 2 or 5 trains to Freeman Street, or the BX 19 bus.

“South Bronx Love Letter” is a series of workshops and community events that showcase storytellers, artists, and community members sharing their love for the Bronx through true life stories, poetry, and art. This series aims to affirm the stories of people who have been living in the South Bronx and pouring their love into it, putting forward an image of the Bronx as defined by the people who live there.

A Mural in the Making

Arts in the Community, Murals

This past Monday we began what we hope to be an exciting collaboration with WHEDco and the Bronx Music Heritage Center!  We will be working together to engage the community in a series of workshops and group discussions about music in the Bronx! BxArts Factory has selected a trio of amazing artists to work with.  The artists will be facilitating the community engagement conversations and also creating individual mural projects inspired by their work with community members.  The 3 murals will beautify the Melrose area in The Bronx where the new BMHC home will be!  Our 1st project began with artist Ralph Serrano and the students from the WHEDco After School Proram in PS/MS 218.  Ralph worked with the students to define what they value the most from the music originated in the Bronx and the music that is present within their communities.  We will soon begin the work on this mural which will be located at the Melrose Building Materials Company on 163rd! Our following 2 projects will take place soon after with artists Sharon Lee De La Cruz (UnoSeisTres) and Crystal Clarity! We will keep you posted on all the work and on the unveiling activities!
